Critters of Draenor

As some of you may have noticed, there are now traveling pet tamers that you can battle at your garrison. Erris the Collector is the tamer for the Alliance and Kura Thunderhoof is the tamer for the Horde.

Should the tamers be visiting you, they will appear near your garrison’s Menagerie. However, they will not appear every day and not every character on your account will be visited (if they visit any of your characters). If you are unlucky enough to not have them visiting you on any specific day, you can group up with someone who has them visiting. By going to that person’s garrison, you are able to complete the daily quest that they give. Speaking of daily quests…..

Erris and Kura offer the daily quest, Critters of Draenor, a daily quest that can only be completed by one toon per account, per day. Upon completion, you will be given a new currency – Traveler’s Token. This, in-turn, is given to Erris or Kura and you are awarded with 3 Flawless Training Battle-Stones and a Traveler’s Pet Supplies bag. Inside the bag you can obtain a variety of things (usually Pocket Lint), but it also has a chance to drop one of three new pets! These pets are: Bone Serpent, Slithershock Elver, and Young Talbuk.

What makes Erris and Kura so different from the other tamers (and Beasts of Fable) that you’ve encountered thus far is that their pets will have their abilities randomized from a pool of 6 potential abilities. This kind of throws a wrench into coming up with foolproof strategies for defeating their pets as you will have no clue what abilities you’ll be facing when you begin the battle. However, the pets that you face will generally be easier to defeat overall than battles that you may already be used to. For example, every fight I’ve done with them at least one of the pets was of Uncommon quality. If you’ve defeated each tamer up until now, you’re used to Rare (or better) quality pets, so this can throw you for a loop. Another odd thing about their pets is that they aren’t level 25 (or at least the ones I’ve faced haven’t been that level). They’ve all been level 23. I don’t know if that was done on purpose or if it was some kind of oversight, but you shouldn’t have any problems defeating them if you’re a somewhat experienced pet battler.

As said before in the case of the Menagerie battles, it has been theorized that these fights have been made easier by Blizzard in an attempt to bring more people into the pet battling community. It would certainly explain why Erris and Kura are so easy to defeat and why their pets are weaker than what we’re used to. What it doesn’t explain, though, is the randomized abilities. If they wanted to truly make the battles easier to bring more people in, why throw that into the mix? Even experienced pet battlers don’t know exactly what to expect, so are they really trying to make things easier or are they trying out new strategies on us for potential future pet battle plans? In any case, I’m happy with the way these battles have panned out.

Normally, I would describe the abilities of each pet and give an explanation of what abilities you should use to counter each pet, but as these battles are very easy, I see no reason to bore you any more than I already do. So I will only be posting what abilities you should use and where/when.

Below is a list of the various combinations of pets/abilities that I have personally encountered. I know that they do not represent all of the potential possibilities of combinations available, so I will be updating this list from time to time as I encounter different variations.

The numbers representing power and speed will be colored according to their respective rarity. Red = Poor quality, Orange = Common quality, Green = Uncommon quality, Blue = Rare quality, Purple = Epic quality.

So if you see a number in green, it means that, that number corresponds to what the number will be if the pet is of Uncommon quality. For example, if I see “Power: 236“, then that means that the pet is of Uncommon quality, and that 236 is the value of the power stat that the pet will have when Uncommon.

As in the case of the possible ability combinations, I will update the power and speed stats as soon as I encounter new rarities and numbers. 🙂

Pet Choice:

Nexus Whelpling (Tail Sweep, Mana Surge, Arcane Storm)
Nether Faerie Dragon (Arcane Blast, Life Exchange, Moonfire)
Eternal Strider (Water Jet, Cleansing Rain, Pump)

Start off with your Nexus Whelpling. When the battle begins, immediately use Arcane Storm to deal a bit of Magic damage to the enemy team. Once the weather is Arcane Winds, use Mana Surge to deal very heavy damage to both Spores and Dusty. If Mana Surge doesn’t kill Dusty, use Tail Sweep until Arcane Storm comes off of cooldown, then use that. Use Mana Surge on cooldown and Spores and Dusty will fall fast. If you happen to die before Mana Surge finishes (though you shouldn’t), bring in your Nether Faerie Dragon and use Moonfire, then Arcane Blast spam until they are dead. Continue using Arcane Blast spam on Salad until either it dies or you die. If you die first, bring in your Eternal Strider and use Cleansing Rain. Use Water Jet spam after that to finish Salad off.

Pet Choice:

Nexus Whelpling (Tail Sweep, Mana Surge, Arcane Storm)
Oily Slimeling (Ooze Touch, Corrosion, Expunge)
Alpine Hare (Flurry, Dodge, Stampede)

Start off with your Nexus Whelpling. When the battle begins, immediately use Arcane Storm to deal a bit of Magic damage to the enemy team. Once the weather is Arcane Winds, use Mana Surge to deal very heavy damage to Enbi’see. This should kill it off. As in the other battle with Spores, Dusty, and Salad, use Tail Sweep spam and Arcane Storm/Mana Surge when off of cooldown. When your Nexus Whelpling falls, bring in your Oily Slimeling. Use Corrosion to place a DoT on the pet, then Expunge for good Magic damage. Use Ooze Touch spam until either the battle is over or your Slimeling dies. If it dies, bring in your Alpine Hare and use Flurry spam until you win.

Pet Choice:

Amethyst Spiderling (Strike, Brittle Webbing, Spiderling Swarm)
Crystal Spider (Strike, Brittle Webbing, Spiderling Swarm)
Smolderweb Hatchling (Strike, Brittle Webbing, Spiderling Swarm)

This one is the simplest of all, and will require almost no explanation whatsoever. Simply use Brittle Webbing when the enemy needs to be webbed. Otherwise use Spiderling Swarm when off of cooldown and Strike spam until you win. Easy as pie.
